5 Powerful Mood Boosting Foods

We are what we eat.  It does sound cliched but the quality and quantity of our foods is directly related to our overall health, wealth and happiness.  It’s incredibly important to fuel your body with energy rich and nutritious foods that are going to benefit your cell function and wellbeing.

Many foods will make you happy for different reasons (isn’t food great?!) – however these 5 powerful mood boosting foods below have shown to have above average happiness-boosting capabilities:

1- Brazil nuts
Brazil nuts have 2,500 times the amount of selenium than any other nut.  Selenium is an incredibly powerful antioxidant and has also been proven in experiments and research to improve mental performance to boost people’s mood.
One study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating just one Brazil nut a day provides you with more than sufficient selenium levels for health.

2- Oily fish (salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel)
Salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel are known as oily fish because they are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are versatile nutrients necessary for healthy brain and heart.
Around 40% of fatty acids in brain cells are made of DHA – which is one of the principle omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish.  People who eat oily fish more often have the highest levels of DHA in their blood – reducing their risk of Alzheimers, promoting brain health and regulating mood.
Researchers at Tufts University found that eating oily fish 3 times a week is sufficient to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 39%.

3- Avocado
Avocado is not only delicious and packed with healthy antioxidant vitamin E, it also contains tryptophan which creates the feel-good hormone serotonin… a guaranteed scientific mood booster!
Avocado has high levels of healthy fats and fibre – allowing you to feel satiated for longer too- for many of us that’s a mood booster in itself!
4- Apricots
These nutritious little balls of fruity sunshine are loaded with vitamin B6 which research has shown reduces depression.  They are also packed with the antioxidants beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin – all of which contribute to boosted, happier moods.  Easy to carry in your handbag, these make an ideal snack on the go.

5- Dark Chocolate
Isn’t this fantastic news?! But it needs to be dark chocolate!
Chocolate (the dark kind that’s at least 70% cocoa) is loaded with flavonoids – a specific type of antioxidant that promotes brain health and the boosting of moods.  It’s important to factor in the calorific value for maximum benefit – and the knowledge that you can reap the benefits from having as little as half an ounce daily.

Our food choices have a massive impact on our moods – from sugar highs and lows to poor satiation and too little fibre… the wrong foods can be a real dampener on your mood and lifestyle.  Hopefully these food ideas above will serve to brighten up your day in the most delicious way possible.

If you are having any food related health concerns, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor or nutritionist.
